"Now more than ever, volunteers are renewing their commitment to helping others and making new connections that bring us closer together as families, as neighbors, as communities, and as a Nation."
Former President George W. Bush
The Council of Promising Leaders, or CPL, is a small group of exceptionally promising young students who consistently display the seven Army values. Council members promote good citizenship, respect for others, and demonstrate strong leadership traits in order to positively influence communities, families, and youth.
Members collaborate to identify under-served needs in their communities, develop plans and strategies targeting specific areas, and positively influence others to help accomplish their objectives. CPL's members meet with local and state leaders, volunteer their time and energy, are advocates for staying in school, and choose to live healthy life-styles.
Members serve for one year terms and must accomplish several goals during their tenure:
- Complete an Individual Leadership Assessment
- Prepare a project portfolio
- Serve in a volunteer capacity for a minimum of 50 hours
- Interview a prominent leader
- Participate in CPL projects and activities
CPL members are volunteers in action. Volunteering produces many positive benefits for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, according to a new study by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The study found teens become empowered, are more likely to become politically engaged, and believe they will graduate from college and make a difference in their communities. Download the study.
The CPL selection process is highly competitive. Selectees must know and live the Army values, be members of the A-B Honor Roll, be recommended in writing by a teacher or prominent community member, have no school discipline infractions, and pass an oral board. Completed applications must be received no later than 1 September. Please contact us for an application or more information.
